How do the Queens pass on color/markings?

Ragdolls come in a large variety of colors and patterns. When we are planning our litters we base our pairings first on making sure they will produce healthy kittens. We work with breeders throughout the Northwest to ensure genetic diversity. And we only keep healthy kitties to add to our program.

Next we try to make pairings that will produce sweet kittens. Personality is very important to us which is why we only keep Queens and Kings that have good temperments.

Finally, we make pairing based on colors and markings. Each Queen has two color genes and the potential for up to two white genes. For example, Lilo carriers a dominate seal gene, that is why she presents as seal, and a recessive lilac gene which means that she can produce blue offspring. She also carries one white gene which is why she has mits.

On the other hand, Newt carries two recessive lilac genes which is why she presents as a lilac. She also carries two white genes making her a bicolor. There is also the rare occurrence of the “true bicolor” that means they only carry one white gene but still present as a bicolor. Honi is a true bicolor which means she can produce color points whereas cats like Newt with two white genes can only produce bicolors and mits, not color points.

When we choose who to breed our girls with we love to imagine what colors and markings they will produce. This is also how we try to predict what we will have so we can tell all of you what we are expecting. For example, when we recently bred our girl Nudge to our friend’s boy Clyde we were expecting chocolates, blues, and lilacs with either mitted or color point markings. We ended up with one chocolate color point, two lilac mitteds, one lilac color point. But no blues! We were surprised because both Nudge and Clyde carry a blue gene so we thought we would get about 50% blues.

We can never be sure what we will get but it is very exciting to guess and see. That is also why we can never give a 100% certain anwer as to what we will have until after the kittens are born.
